Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich Votes Nay

More of note, I suspect, at least in the years to come, is Ohio Democrat Rep. Dennis Kucinich's reasons for bucking his own party leadership to vote against the bill.

In a statement issued following passage of the bill (full statement posted below), the progressive Democrat describes it as "a bailout under a blue cross", given that it "would put the government in the role of accelerating the privatization of health care [by] requiring at least 21 million Americans to buy private health insurance from the very industry that causes costs to be so high, which will result in at least $70 billion in new annual revenue, much of which is coming from taxpayers."

He also notes that the "'robust public option' which would have offered a modicum of competition to a monopolistic industry was whittled down from an initial potential enrollment of 129 million Americans to 6 million."

URGENT!!!!! call and email today! and pass it on! [Sep. 29th, 2009|10:55 am]

Tuesday is a critical day in the saga of the public option. Democrats Charles Schumer (New York) and Jay Rockefeller (West Virginia) are introducing an amendment to include the public option in the bill to be reported out by the Senate Finance Committee -- the committee anointed by the White House as its favored vehicle for getting health care reform.

Before you read another word, call and email the Senate offices of Democrats Max Baucus (Montana), Tom Carper (Delaware), Robert Menendez (New Jersey), Kent Conrad (North Dakota), and Ben Nelson (Florida) -- telling them you want them to vote in favor of the public option amendment. And get everyone you know in these states to do the same. Hell, you might as well phone and email Republican Olympia Snowe (Maine) and make the same pitch.

The masquerade is over! The "public option" is ... dead. [Aug. 19th, 2009|03:13 pm]
Health care reform is now a private option: WHICH FOR PROFIT INSURANCE COMPANY DO YOU WANT? You have to choose. And you have to pay. If you have a low income, under HR3200 government will subsidize the private insurance companies and you will still have to pay premiums, co-pays and deductibles.

The Administration plan requires that everyone must have health insurance, so it is delivering tens of millions of new "customers" to the insurance companies. Health care? Not really. Insurance care! Absolutely. Cost controls? No chance.

You will next hear talk about "co-ops." The truth is that insurance company campaign contributions have co-opted the public interest...

The hotly-debated HR3200, the so-called "health care reform" bill, is nothing less than corporate welfare in the guise of social welfare and reform. It is a convoluted mess. The real debate which we should be having is not occurring.

Removing the "public option" from a public bill paid for by public money is not in the public interest. What is left is a "private option" paid for with public money. Why should public money be spent on a private option which does not guarantee 100% coverage nor have any cost controls? A true public option would provide 30% savings immediately which would then cover the 1/3rd of the population who presently have no health care.

dear CITY OF LOS ANGELES [Jul. 9th, 2009|09:07 pm]
how about following through with some of the laws you have on the books?

You seem hellbent on ticketing people for not moving their cars EVERY TWO HOURS during an oil shortage.  You do know that this is basically wasting gas right?

You instituted a new law that allows people to water their yards only 2 days a week but you did NOTHING to show us how we could plant our yards with NATIVE VEGETATION.  People are still watering their lawns 7 days a week...even at NOON and I don't see any sort of "sprinkler maid" giving out tix.

You instituted a gas powered leaf blower ban over 10 years ago... growing grass in the desert with water we don't have, then cutting it weekly and using the leaf blowers (that generate as much pollution in an hour as a car driving 350 miles) to push the remains into the storm drains.  BRILLIANT!

Where are the leaf blower maids?

Seriously, what is the point of the law if you're not going to do anything about it?  The dumbest law here is the "2 Hour parking" sign, but somehow you've made that your priority.

New uranium mining near Grand Canyon [May. 15th, 2009|12:22 pm]
New uranium mining near Grand Canyon
The U.S. Department of the Interior authorized a Canadian mining company to drill for uranium near the Grand Canyon. This approval may only be the beginning.  Since 2003, the number of mining claims within five miles of Grand Canyon National Park has increased from 10 to more than 1,100.  Most, if not all, of these claims are for uranium that has left a legacy of cancer and contamination throughout the southwestern United States.

Click here to watch my commentary on CNN and take action today.

Mining near the canyon will not only threaten our greatest national treasure, but will also pose risks to the Colorado River that flows through the canyon.  The river provides drinking water for 25 million Americans.

It's not too late to stop the mining and protect this valuable water supply.

Tell Sec. Salazar to make the land near the Grand Canyon off-limits to mining.

The Grand Canyon area is a natural treasure that must be protected.  The Administration can stop these mining activities.

Rumsfeld's growing stake in Tamiflu [Apr. 29th, 2009|11:06 pm]
bit of ye olde news... from 2005

NEW YORK (Fortune) - The prospect of a bird flu outbreak may be panicking people around the globe, but it's proving to be very good news for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other politically connected investors in Gilead Sciences, the California biotech company that owns the rights to Tamiflu, the influenza remedy that's now the most-sought after drug in the world.

Mash Up Sounsystem - Get A:Head (element abuse, helicopter face, concrete cookie + retrigger) [Apr. 22nd, 2009|12:50 pm]

V/A - Get A:Head

"Expect the unexpected" could well be the motto for the Mash Up Records label and artists collective, and their new release, the 5-track 12" compilation "Get A:Head", illustrates this quite well with a music selection that some would consider paradoxical.
Side A of this release was left essentially in the hands of Scottish veteran producer Element Abuse, who opens hostilities with "Oxna", a furious mélange of poly-rhythms and cut-up voice samples overlying a surprisingly calm soundscape - a piece which is perhaps the most in-your-face track on this release. He follows suit remixing "Purpose Aches", by fellow Scottish artist Helicopterface, with a similar aesthetic approach.
In contrast, Side B begins in a rather laidback fashion with a smooth electro-acoustic piece by Concrete Cookie, in collaboration with cellist Laura Cetilia and guitarist Marc Thomas, titled "Dry Red Shard", while "Positive Collide", Helicopterface's second contribution, comes across as an intense piece of metallic background and percussion over a brooding soundscape intermeshed with shifting rhythmic patterns. "Mean a Swing", by Brazilian experimentalist Retrigger, is the decidedly oddball track on this release, a crazy but meticulous patchwork of sampling and rhythmic patterns for which Retrigger shamelessly grabbed musical elements and influences wherever he could; it's a track which leaves the listener wanting more.
For home listening, this release is unfortunately too short (especially considering the two-sided vinyl format) and may well leave the listener craving additional material - with some luck, perhaps the Mash Up Records collective will consider a follow up, full-length release. "Get A:Head" also seems to have clear potential as a tool for DJs (especially in the breakcore and related fields), with a relatively broad scope of material that can be utilized for melodic or rhythm building - plus Retrigger's inspiring piece of insanity.

Get A:Head review in Soundproector (russian mag) [Apr. 15th, 2009|12:01 pm]

V/A - Get A:Head

V/A - Get A:Head12-и дюймовый винил Get A:Head был выпущен в феврале 2009 года лос-анжелским лейблом Mashup Soundsystem и содержит 5 треков от музыкантов из Британии, США и Бразилии.

and here it is in english ;)
